The Muskogee people were an alliance of several tribes based around river valleys, with shared culture and individual political systems. ![]() After the Spanish brought diseases, such as smallpox, that decimated much of the Indigenous population in the 1600s, Georgia's Indigenous people reorganized into the Muskogee and the Cherokee. The first people arrived in Georgia at least 13,000 years ago, forming various tribes across the state.
